Lap Band Surgery and Gall Stones

Adjustable gastric band surgery is a procedure used for limiting the food intake by placing a band around the stomach. It helps in controlling the diet intake thus resulting in weight loss.  However sudden weight loss can lead to the formation of stones in gall bladder known as gall stones. Reports suggests that about 11 % of people undergoing adjustable band surgery have developed gall stones because of improper balance in the level of bile salts and pigments supporting digestion.

In case if there are formation of gall stones, it is advised to get it removed surgically. Thus it is better to get it removed at the time of adjustable band surgery itself. There are no major problems in those people who do not have gall bladder in their body as it only stores the bile juice temporarily. However, a surgeon may not have any problem in performing the lap band surgery in the patients without gall bladder. It is also seen that such patients shows normal results of the weight loss surgery.
